Clara sat up, rubbing her eyes. “I think Aunt Sarah wrote it.”
That was all the confirmation we needed.
Early the next morning, we set out toward Duluth.
A Door That Opened After Three Years
Fresh snow dusted the sidewalks when we pulled into the neighborhood.
The address led us to a cozy, modest brick house with forest-green shutters and a wooden swing on the porch.
I pressed the doorbell.
Silence.
I knocked firmly on the doorframe.
Still nothing.
Then Clara lightly tugged my sleeve. The front curtain had flickered. Someone was watching us from inside.
I took a step back.
“Ms. Hayes?” I called out clearly. “My name is General Richard Miller. I’m here with the children of Thomas Sterling.”
The door slowly swung open.
A woman in her mid-thirties stood in the entry. Dark hair framed a tired, weathered face, and tears instantly welled in her eyes.
She stared at the twins as if gazing at a ghost.
“Oh, merciful heaven,” she choked out. “You have your mother’s eyes.”
Clara took a step forward. “Are you Aunt Sarah?”
The woman covered her mouth, fell to her knees, and pulled both children into a tight embrace.
“I’ve been searching for you for three whole years,” she sobbed.
The Truth About Their Stepmother
That night, Sarah finally pieced the puzzle together for us.
The woman who had left the twins at the airport had been going by the name Evelyn Sterling. However, that was a stolen identity. Her real name was Evelyn Ward.
For years, she had drifted from state to state, targeting financially stable, grieving widowers and taking advantage of vulnerable families for personal gain.
Thomas Sterling, the twins’ father, had met her shortly after losing his wife to illness. By the time he realized he had brought a predator into his home, his own health had declined rapidly.
“He caught onto what she was doing,” Sarah explained softly, setting down her teacup. “But he ran out of time before he could legally secure the children’s safety.”
She placed several thick manila folders on the table. Inside were photographs, bank ledgers, forged documents, and old news clippings.
Marcus scanned the files with a grim expression. “This goes far beyond simple neglect.”
