“Hello there,” I said softly. “Are your parents nearby?”
The boy lowered his head toward his shoes.
“She isn’t our mother,” he whispered.
“What are your names?”
“I’m Clara,” the girl answered quietly.
“I’m Caleb.”
“Are you twins?”
Clara gave a small nod. “We’re five years old.”
I sat down on the empty seat beside them. “Is someone coming to pick you up?”
Neither child answered right away.
Finally, Clara shook her head.
That small gesture hit me harder than a physical blow.
Over my years in service, I had learned that frightened children usually cry. Abandoned children rarely do. They simply go quiet.
I knew that silent detachment all too well.
“What happened to your father?” I asked gently.
Caleb clutched his stuffed dog tighter. “He passed away last spring.”
Clara looked toward the empty boarding gate. “She said we were too much work to look after anymore.”
Behind me, Marcus let out a slow, heavy breath.
I stood up.
“Major Vance.”
“Sir?”
“Contact airport police immediately. Notify terminal operations and the airline. That flight isn’t leaving the gate until we get some real answers.”
“On it right away, General.”
Within minutes, security officers arrived at the gate.
I unbuttoned my heavy uniform coat and carefully wrapped it around Clara’s shivering shoulders.
“When was the last time you two had something to eat?”
Caleb paused to think. “Yesterday morning, I think.”
My heart sank.
“Let’s go fix that right now.”
For the first time, Clara offered the faint glimmer of a smile.
The Secret Hidden Inside a Toy Dog
Later that evening, we gathered in a quiet office near the airport’s administrative hub.
The kids had eaten warm chicken soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, and slices of apple pie. Healthy color had finally returned to their cheeks.
While Clara dozed off against my arm, Caleb idly picked at a loose thread on his stuffed dog.
Suddenly, a tiny slip of paper slid out from a torn seam in the toy’s belly.
It was a neatly folded note written in precise handwriting:
“Find Sarah Hayes. She holds the truth.”
An address was scribbled right below it:
Duluth, Minnesota.
Marcus leaned in to examine the note. “Do you kids know who Sarah Hayes is?”
Caleb shook his head. “Daddy told me to only pull that string if we got lost or needed real help.”
