Inside his kitchen, he placed three things in front of me: a key, the name of a divorce attorney, and a sealed envelope from a fertility specialist in Boston.
“My late wife spent years being blamed for something that wasn’t her fault,” he said. “I learned never to trust the loudest person in a marriage.”
The envelope contained an appointment already paid for.
I stared at him. “Why would you do this?”
“Because Julian lied.”
He slid a photocopy across the table. It was a lab report I had never seen. Julian’s name was at the top.
Severe male-factor infertility. Near-zero probability of natural conception.
My hands began to shake.
Garrison’s gaze hardened. “Your husband had the original buried through a clinic administrator. I kept a copy because that administrator was once the subject of an investigation.”
“You investigated him?”
A strange, almost dangerous calm settled over Garrison’s face.
“I used to investigate many people.”
That was the first moment I understood Julian had not abandoned a helpless woman.
He had left evidence behind.
PART 2
The Boston specialist did not speak gently.
“There is no medical evidence that you were infertile,” Dr. Victoria Vance said. “Your hormone levels are excellent, and the scarring from your last procedure came from an unnecessary surgery.”
I felt the room tilt.
Julian had chosen the surgeon, insisted I sign forms while sedated, then told me the operation failed because my body was defective.
Dr. Vance closed the file. “Someone made you the problem to protect the actual patient.”
Garrison sat beside me, his hand open on the armrest, never touching me until I placed mine inside it.
