She wiped her face.
“I thought maybe everybody was asking him for too much.”
“Sophie—”
“Daddy said he wanted his life back.”
She looked up.
“Mom, wasn’t I part of his life?”
I pulled her against me.
And finally, she cried.
Quietly.
Trying not to make too much noise.
Even while her heart was breaking, she was trying not to bother anyone.
Two days later, her dance instructor called.
“Sarah, is everything okay? Sophie withdrew from the showcase solo.”
I frowned.
“What solo?”
Apparently, Sophie had been selected for a special performance.
Something she’d practiced for months.
But three weeks earlier, she’d given up her place.
When I asked why, she shrugged.
“It’s not important.”
“Sophie, you loved that dance.”
She looked down.
