Gregory reviewed the paperwork without hesitation, signed his initials across every section, and had Pamela affix her own neat signature right beside his before handing the clipboard back. Nine days later, after hours of hard labor under the blazing sun, the water sparkled like liquid sapphire.
I happened to be on the premises because my father had called me during my lunch break to bring over an intake gasket he had accidentally left in the trunk of my car. Pamela stepped out onto the travertine patio in designer sunglasses just as my dad was packing his heavy crescent wrenches into his metal toolbox.
She stared down at the rippling, crystal-clear surface with mild satisfaction before glancing down at the final statement my dad handed her. “Seven thousand eight hundred dollars seems rather steep for a little bit of cleaning and pipe glue, Walter.”
“That is the exact figure listed on your signed estimate, ma’am,” Walter answered evenly, holding his clipboard against his hip without blinking.
“You really expect almost eight grand for this?” Pamela scoffed, waving a dismissive hand across the expansive water as if the last nine days of backbreaking labor had simply materialized out of thin air.
Dad calmly tapped the bottom of the page where the itemized breakdown was printed in bold ink. “A brand new commercial-grade pump, rebuilt internal manifolds, extensive leak detection, and sixty hours of manual work are all accounted for right there.”
Pamela did not even bother reading the itemized rows of numbers, choosing instead to let out a condescending little laugh that instantly set my nerves on edge. “You do remember that my husband signs your daughter’s paychecks over at the corporate office, don’t you?”
My stomach plummeted straight to my shoes as I realized exactly what kind of game she was playing. My father remained completely motionless, his expression as flat and unreadable as a slab of cool granite under the patio awning.
“I would strongly suggest you reconsider arguing with me over a pool maintenance invoice, Walter,” Pamela added, narrowing her eyes behind her dark designer frames.
“Pamela, please do not drag my employment into a separate business transaction,” I pleaded, stepping forward before my father could speak.
She turned her icy gaze toward me with a smug tilt of her chin. “I am simply reminding everyone that we are all part of one big interconnected circle, Paige.”
My father folded the white invoice into a neat square, slipped it calmly into his breast pocket, and gazed across the blue surface of the pool for several quiet seconds. When he turned back toward her, there was neither fury nor desperation in his eyes, only a tiny, knowing smile touching the edges of his lips.
The Standard Procedure
As the months passed, Sun Valley Pools continued to grow. My father’s reputation for uncompromising honesty and thorough craftsmanship spread throughout the valley. Commercial property managers, neighborhood associations, and residential homeowners actively sought out his services, knowing that Walter’s diagnostic evaluations were absolute and unassailable.
