The Day I Inherited $50 Million, a Banker Told Me I’d Been Divorced for Nine Months, Then I Went Home to My Husband’s Party

He gave a short laugh. “Hannah’s had a stressful week.”

His director looked away. My face went hot, but I kept my voice steady.

“The mortgage came out of my account on Monday. I also paid the insurance on your Porsche.”

The laughter stopped.

I could have listed every grocery bill and repair invoice, every time I transferred money because Nate said a commission was late. Instead, I took a breath.

“I came out here to have dinner, not to serve everyone.”

Barbara’s mouth tightened. Nate gave his guests a strained smile. “Let’s not make this bigger than it is.”

I went inside and made myself a plate. One of the guests’ wives followed me into the kitchen and asked about my job, and she actually listened while I explained how we handle supply delays. For a few minutes, I felt like a person instead of a problem Nate needed to manage.
