Part 1: The Secret Family
My husband kissed me beneath the airport departures board and promised he would return from London in one week.
Then Daniel walked away carrying the briefcase I had given him for our tenth anniversary.
Two hours later, my flight was canceled. The airline directed me to the first-class lounge while I waited for another departure.
The moment I entered, my suitcase struck my ankle because I stopped so suddenly.
Daniel was sitting near the windows.
His hand rested on the knee of a younger woman dressed in expensive clothes. A diamond bracelet circled her wristâthe same bracelet I had once noticed on our credit-card statement. Daniel had claimed it was a gift for an important client.
A little boy climbed onto his lap.
âDaddy, are we going to our London house?â
Daniel kissed his hair.
âSoon, Noah.â
I stepped behind a marble partition before they could see me.
Through a narrow opening, I watched the woman slide a blue folder across the table.
âOnce Eleanor signs this, her shares become yours,â she said.
My name appeared on the document.
Daniel smiled.
âShe signs anything I place in front of her. She still thinks the company is barely surviving.â
The woman laughed.
âAnd after the transfer?â
âI file for divorce. We sell the Boston house, move the money offshore, and leave Eleanor with the debts.â
For ten years, I had mistaken his arrogance for confidence. Now I finally heard the contempt beneath it.
Noah pulled at Danielâs sleeve.
âWill she be sad?â
Daniel glanced toward the bar.
âSheâll be fine. Eleanor is good at losing quietly.â
That sentence hurt more than discovering the affair.
I raised my phone and recorded everything: the offshore account, the planned transfer, the false signature, and Danielâs intention to destroy me financially.
When the woman took Noah to the restroom and Daniel stepped away to answer a call, I moved close enough to photograph the document.
