A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the entire driveway, drowning out even the distant hum of the freeway. Pamela lowered her face into her hands, unable to look at any of her neighbors, while Gregory’s jaw worked silently without producing a single word.
“Mabel filed multiple formal complaints about massive water loss last year,” Walter explained to me. “The municipal water department wanted to inspect the historical boundary easements, but Gregory flatly refused entry, claiming his new stonework was too delicate to be disturbed.”
I looked at my father, utterly amazed by how many pieces he had quietly assembled behind the scenes. “Is this why you were not the least bit worried when Pamela threatened my job yesterday afternoon?”
“Of course,” Walter said, opening a digital PDF of the multi-page work agreement Gregory and Pamela had signed nine days prior. “Paragraph seven explicitly authorizes Sun Valley Pools to isolate, inspect, document, and report any illegal, hazardous, or non-compliant plumbing configurations discovered during standard repairs.”
“And you made both of them sign it,” I murmured, recalling his strict paperwork rule.
“Both deed holders,” Walter confirmed with a slow smile. “Pamela signed away her right to claim I was snooping, and Gregory signed an agreement acknowledging that any cross-connection impacting neighboring utility meters would be referred immediately to the municipal board.”
“So when she tried to intimidate you into waiving the bill…” I started.
“She was threatening an independent contractor who was already holding concrete evidence of a municipal utility violation in his glove compartment,” Walter finished smoothly. “I went home, filed the digital report with the city water administrator, notified Mabel of the easement conflict, and scheduled the official city inspection for eight o’clock this morning.”
“Then why did Gregory call the police?” I asked, gesturing toward the cruisers.
Dad chuckled softly. “Gregory did not call them, Mabel did, after Gregory decided to park his luxury SUV directly behind my work truck and scream that he was going to destroy my contracting license.”
One of the patrol officers standing near the garage door let out a quiet snort of amusement, hastily coughing into his fist to cover it up. Gregory caught the reaction and suddenly locked his furious eyes onto me, his face twisting into an ugly snarl.
“Paige, you had better get your father under control right now if you value your future at our company,” Gregory spat, taking an aggressive step toward me.
Before I could even process the threat, my father stepped cleanly off the truck bumper, placing his broad shoulders directly between me and my corporate manager. “You made the grave mistake of threatening my daughter’s livelihood in private yesterday, Gregory, but doing it in front of two sworn law enforcement officers and an official city witness is remarkably stupid.”
The officer who had restrained Gregory earlier stepped forward with a pair of handcuffs resting against his duty belt. “Sir, you were explicitly warned to cease issuing threats, so if you say another hostile word to this young lady, you will spend the rest of your morning in the back of my patrol car.”
